BBC Breakfast's brand new studio made its on-screen debut this week but the morning news programme received a host of complaints over the makeover.

The broadcaster previously announced a makeover for the show with a new studio that would be shared with BBC Sport.

On Monday, hosts Sally Nugent and Jon Kay unveiled the brand new studio but viewers rushed to Twitter to complain over the "waste of money" project.

One viewer tweeted: "Claustrophobic new studio! Zoom out the background graphic so those buildings aren’t towering over the presenters and get the cameras back further if there’s room! Have they cut your budget?"

Another added: "Why did they change the other design! They've made it look horrible now. So annoying," while a third said: "Waste of money on pointless new studio whilst BBC absolutely cuts local news and radio to the bones. Very distorted priorities!"

Someone else echoed: "BBC wasting money on new studio with latest gadgets. When there cutting back on local radio and paying football pundits four figure salaries."

However, some viewers praised the new look as one commented: “A new look is so much more effective when new graphics and a new studio launch simultaneously. Well done #BBCBreakfast and the team up in Salford.”

Another shared: “It looks fantastic. Well done to all the team.”

BBC Breakfast is still being broadcast from Salford's Media City but the new space is now much larger with three additional cameras and high-tech graphics.

The programme's iconic red sofa has remained following the show's latest makeover in over 10 years.

The Breakfast team share the new space with BBC Sport, who will use it for the daily Sportsday programme, live bulletins throughout the day as well as the Football News Show, the twice-weekly programme available on BBC iPlayer.

The new studio is part of the BBC’s strategy to introduce new, versatile studios that can be used by multiple teams throughout the day to provide the best value for audiences. The space is going to be used for more than 20 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Beloved weather presenter Carol Kirkwood enjoyed a shake-up to her usual forecasting routine, joining the hosts in the studio.

Carol, and the other BBC Breakfast weather presenters, previously presented from a different space projected onto one of the screen's in the studio.

Commenting the different set-up, Sally said: “I like your new weather map, very very posh.”

Carol replied: “I’m used to being in a broom cupboard to do the weather in the morning.

“So it’s so nice to be able to walk over and walk back, it’s a whole new world for me.”
