BBC F1 commentator Jack Nicholls has been removed from his Formula E role after he was was accused of inappropriate behaviour towards female staff members.

It had already been confirmed that he would not be working at the Jakarta ePrix in Round 11 of the Championship this coming weekend, but initially, neither the broadcaster or Formula E had announced the reason why. But now it has emerged his sacking followed an independent investigation following complaints by three women.

It was alleged that Nicholls had touched the women, one of whom he was in a relationship with, inappropriately. According to a report in the Times, two further complaints were reportedly made by witnesses of the behaviour.

A Formula E spokesperson confirmed to Mirror Sport: "Formula E can confirm that an investigation was carried out in response to complaints of inappropriate behaviour received about Jack Nicholls. Following this investigation, Jack Nicholls’ contract to provide race commentary was terminated.”

As well as his work with Formula E, Nicholls works on the BBC 5 Live radio commentary of Formula 1. However, that coverage comes through IMG, rather than directly through the Beeb.

It has not yet been confirmed as to whether Nicholls’ position within IMG or the BBC F1 coverage will also now be reviewed. He was absent from the Monaco Grand Prix on the weekend, but it is unclear whether that measure was temporary.

Nicholls himself was quoted as saying: “Although disappointed with the decision, I respect it and accept why it was taken. I want to take full responsibility for what I did and apologise unreservedly for a couple of isolated incidents that has made those concerned feel uncomfortable. I never meant any harm and I am committed to making amends and to be more mindful of my behaviour in future.”

The experienced Ben Edwards will serve as his replacement for the remainder of the Formula E campaign, which culminates in London on Sunday, July 30. He's previously worked in Formula 1 for the BBC, as well as Channel 4 and F1TV.

Mirror Sport has also contacted the BBC, as well as representatives of Nicholls, for further comment. The next Formula E event takes place Portland, USA, on June 24.
