Man Utd women's team 'concerned' about Greenwood return after charges dropped

Several members of the Manchester United‘s women team harbour serious concerns about the possibility of Mason Greenwood returning to the club’s facilities, it has been claimed.

A report in The Times claims that multiple players of United’s women team are strongly opposed to the possibility of the player returning to the club’s Carrington training facilities. It is said that other female members of staff also oppose his potential return.

The report adds that United’s first-team squad are split over the possibility of the striker returning to their ranks. Many are said to be uncomfortable with the scenario while others are suggested to believe that criminal charges being dropped against him means he should be allowed to return.

Mirror Football approached Manchester United, who have declined to comment on the situation.

Greenwood, 21, had all charges against him – including attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm – dropped earlier this month by the Crown Prosecution Service.

He had been due to stand trial in November but the CPS confirmed that the charges had been dropped due to "the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light".

That announcement followed the footballer's arrest last year. Speaking after the decision, the 21-year-old forward said: "I am relieved this matter is now over. I would like to thank my family, loved ones and friends for their support."

Greenwood has not played for United since January 22 last year after being charged with one count of attempted rape, a count of assault and repeatedly engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour. Greenwood denied all charges.

He remains suspended by the club as they conduct their own internal investigation. The club confirmed earlier this month that they are conducting their own process but did not put a timeline on it and there is a possibility that Greenwood will not return to the squad this season.

United will interview Greenwood to ascertain his version of events and will also get specialists in to assess his mental and physical state. The club are keen to proceed with caution and are therefore in no rush to make a decision on his future at Old Trafford.

United’s women team currently top the Women’s Super League with 10 wins and 32 points from their 13 league matches to date. They are top of the standings, sitting one point ahead of Chelsea – who have a game in hand.

Greenwood remains under contract at Old Trafford until the summer of 2025. He has scored 35 goals in 129 appearances for United having made his senior debut in the Champions League in March 2019, and won a single England cap in 2020.
