A popular Alton Towers ride is reopening just in time for half term.

Nemesis Sub-Terra, a popular drop tower dark ride, is back in action from May 27. When Nemesis Sub-Terra closed at the end of 2015 it was reportedly due to maintenance issues, but no official reason for the attraction's closure was ever given.

Thrill-seekers will be pleased to hear that it is reopening in just over a week's time.

The underground attraction invites guests to embark on an intense journey and witness the research of The Phalanx, before freefalling into the pit.

Nemesis Sub-Terra, also known as the Phalanx Research Facility, is being reopened by The Phalanx, the secret organisation tasked with keeping the Nemesis beast under control.

Civilians are invited to take a ride deep into the Earth’s core to discover the secretive research of The Phalanx. Riders must be 1.4m or over.

As well as the reopening of Nemesis Sub-Terra, the park's engineers are in the process of updating the currently shut Nemesis, which is an above ground coaster.

The entire 250-tonne, 716-metre-long track is being replaced as part of the transformation, before the ride reopens in 2024.

Located next to Nemesis Sub-Terra, fans of Nemesis can also watch the transformation take place on a specially constructed viewing platform, overlooking the site.

Bianca Sammut, divisional director at Alton Towers Resort, said: “As Europe’s first-ever inverted rollercoaster, Nemesis rightly holds legendary status among thrillseekers. At Alton Towers Resort we’re committed to providing visitors with stand-out attractions that are unmatched by anyone else.

“Reaching this latest milestone in the transformation of Nemesis is a proud moment for everyone involved in the project. And for all thrillseekers out there it means the day we can take the wraps off our trilliant revamp is edging ever closer. Stay alert for more developments…”

Also new at Alton Towers this year is spooky attraction The Curse at Alton Manor, where guests are confronted by flying demons, levitating dolls and haunted chandeliers.

The haunting and immersive dark ride is really not for the faint of heart.

The attraction charts the terrifying story of Emily Alton - the troubled daughter of a pair of Victorian high society figures who prefer partying to parenting, until one night when they disappeared into thin air.

The only person remaining was Emily, and some say she still haunts Alton Manor to this day looking for the one thing denied to her – play.

Visitors are taken on a step-by-step journey as Emily wreaks her awful revenge.

The rider is immersed in the awful situation through the use of cutting-edge audio technology- which makes you feel that Emily is talking directly to you, along with advanced 3D projection-mapping.

One grotesque scene which is brought to life in 3D is the the Grand Hall, where an opulent party becomes a scene of death with skeletal bodies lying slumped at tables.
