The killing of Brianna Ghey may have been a hate crime, police have said.
The 16-year-old, who was a trans girl, was stabbed to death in Culcheth Linear Park near Warrington, Cheshire, on Saturday.
Police have arrested a girl, 15, and a boy, also 15, on suspicion of murder.
The stabbing was initially described as a "targeted" attack and police said they did not believe Brianna was targeted for being transgender.
However, in a new statement released today the force said they are now exploring all lines of enquiry "including whether this was a hate crime".

In a statement, the force said: "All lines of enquiry are being explored, including whether this was a hate crime.
Brianna Ghey was found dead at around 3.13pm on Saturday (Liverpool Echo)"Please continue to avoid speculation online and be wary of sharing misinformation relating to this case."
Detectives are also still continuing to trace the weapon used in the attack.
Yesterday, Brianna's family paid tribute to her, describing her as a "much loved daughter, granddaughter, and baby sister" who was "strong" and fearless".
