BBC viewers got quite the surprise earlier this evening when Iceland's Dadi Freyr took to the stage in Liverpool for a surprise performance at the final of the Eurovision Song Contest.

Dadi, who represented Iceland in the 2021 competition, made an appearance at the end of the show to perform a fan-favourite hit.

Viewers were shocked and delighted to hear him singing Atomic Kitten's 2000 iconic song Whole Again.

Fans rushed to social media to gush over the segment, with some calling the performance their "winner".

"Dadi Freyr doing Atomic Kitten is moment of the year. No doubt," one user said.

Another added: "It was too short. We need the whole song," while one posted: "I am going to download the cover of atomic kitten!! Amazing!! I’m now whole again."

"Also a massive fan of the legends from Iceland singing an Atomic Kitten classic," one said.

Dadi was due to represent Iceland in 2020 song contest with the song Think About Things before the event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Eurovision presenter Scott Mills teased the surprise performance earlier this week, with the Radio 2 DJ saying: "There has been some stuff happening where it's been a completely closed set so nobody has been allowed to go in there."

Rylan added: "There are some secrets."

Scott continued: "So what's going on there? No one will tell us I promise you." Rylan jokingly admitted everything his BBC colleague had said was true but after one or two drinks he "may spill some of his secrets."

Ahead of this evening's final, Eurovision fans speculated online about who the mystery performer could be.

"Is this spice girl rumour actually true? One minute it’s Paul McCartney next it’s SG! I can’t cope #Eurovision," one frantic fan mused on Twitter earlier today.

"It'll be Paul McCartney. It would be a crime to do Eurovision in Liverpool and not have Macca," another guessed, as a third sarcastically wrote: "Almost certainly the secret #Eurovision act tonight is Paul McCartney - checkout woman at Morrisons says her sis saw him in Liverpool last night. And you cannot get a more reliable source than that."

Another declared: "If you announce a secret Eurovision headliner in Liverpool and it’s not Paul McCartney I reckon there will be riots."

One Twitter user wasn't too excited about the idea of a Beatle rocking the Eurovision stage, sharing an angry gif on Twitter and writing: "Me when f***ing Paul McCartney inevitably turns up at Eurovision tonight to bore me to death with another half-hour rendition of Hey Jude."
