Superdrug has released a new cleansing balm that has been receiving rave reviews online, and being a big fan of affordable skincare I was delighted to be asked to give it a whirl.
Currently on sale for half price at just £4.99, the B. Melting Cleansing Balm has been described as an 'amazing dupe' for the Elemis Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm, which retails at a slightly more eye-watering price of £48.
At first glance, I was impressed by the sheer size of the shallow round container. Paying less than a fiver for 120 grams of any beauty product these days feel like a good deal.
With elegant, minimal branding, the pot proudly announces its contents as B. Cleanse Melting Beauty Balm, part of the B. Skincare range that offers different products for a customisable skincare routine.
The buttery smooth balm looked similar to coconut oil, and at first sniff, it smelt a bit like it too. I cautiously dipped my finger in, suddenly concerned that it felt greasy to the touch.
As I raised my hand to my face, that smell became somewhat overpowering, a scent that I couldn't quite put my finger on, but it did remind me a little bit of lard.
Following the directions for use, I slathered a globule of the balm onto my dry, make-up-laden skin, then wet my hands slightly to massage it in.
It immediately felt like I was rubbing my face with Vaseline and I watched in horror as mascara ran into foundation, and lipstick streaked up my cheeks.
I started to think that this was a mistake and that rubbing balm on your face is probably just another gimmick.
My mind soon changed, however, as I wiped off the greasy remnants using the Studio London Microfibre Cloths, which I had been sent alongside the balm.
Soft and velvety against the skin, this is where the magic happened. My make-up came off easily, and my skin instantly felt super soft. A quick once over with a dry towel and I felt positively glowing.
At the age of 48, I suffer from skin that often feels dry but instantly feels greasy if I over-moisturise. A double whammy of a skincare dilemma.
But this balm, despite feeling greasy upon application, actually left my skin feeling lovely and soft without weighing it down.
In just a few moments, I'd removed all of my makeup and felt squeaky clean, and for £4.99 that's an absolute winner!
It would appear that with 95 five-star reviews on the Superdrug website, I'm not the only one that feels that way.
When one reviewer said it "glides on the skin and the makeup melts away. Leaves skin feeling clean, fresh and hydrated without leaving it feeling greasy or irritated", I couldn't help but agree.
All in all, I thought the B. Cleanse Melting Beauty Balm was really effective and I'll definitely be adding it to my regular skincare routine. Just hoping that I can get used to that smell.
