A villager fed up with potholes wrecking his car has set up a sign warning drivers: “Adjust bra straps” and “Secure your nuts”.

John Burton, 68, devised the yellow placard with bold black letters after “years of neglect” to the pitted highway.

He said: “We thought humour was the way to bring attention to this issue.”

His sign welcomes drivers to the “worst-maintained road in the county” and blames the council.

It warns: “Caution. Remove dentures. Adjust bra straps. Secure your nuts”.

John said: “This has been going on for years... at least 40 according to my neighbours.

“The council send a worker every time we complain and they fill the biggest holes with tar.

“Then they drive off as if the job is done, leaving significant holes elsewhere and doing no real maintenance.”

Mark Thomas, 48, a neighbour in Horebin, Carmarthen, added: “It’s like the old horse and cart days. It would be quicker and safer for me to go to work through people’s fields.

“There’s nothing been done here for 12 years other than a few potholes.”

Five households signed a letter to the council to ask them to resurface the road. It said: “While the sign is intended to be funny the constant wear on our vehicles is a real issue.

“This is another example of the discrimination rural residents face. No urban road would be allowed to degrade to this extent.

A Carmarthenshire council spokesman said they carried out scheduled checks on roads but the number they would like to resurface “far outstrips the budget available”.
