Both Leeds and Manchester United joined forces to condemn the vile chants heard from both sets of supporters during Sunday afternoon's clash at Elland Road.

Chants could be heard throughout the match, most notably during the first half when references to the Munich Air Disaster were chanted from areas housing Leeds supporters, with United fans also singing "Istanbul" in reference to the two Leeds fans who were killed during violence before the 2000 UEFA Cup semi-final between the Whites and Galatasaray.

Eight Manchester United players were killed in the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, with the club commemorating the 65th anniversary last Monday.

The clubs referenced the tragedies in their statements, which were issued on their websites and respective social media channels.

"Both clubs strongly condemn chanting from both sets of fans regarding historic tragedies at today’s game," they said.

"Such behaviour is completely unacceptable and we will continue to work together with our respective fan groups and the Premier League and other authorities on eradicating it from football."

The Premier League also issued a statement on the chants.

They said: "The Premier League condemns the chanting heard during today’s match between Leeds United and Manchester United.

"The League is treating the issue of tragedy chanting as a priority and as a matter of urgency."

Manchester United ran out 2-0 winners at Elland Road thanks to late goals from Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho, who had come on as a substitute.

United skipper Harry Maguire was starting a Premier League away game for the first time since August, and was delighted to return to the team.

" Winning the game is most important, it’s not about myself," he said.

"I’m the captain of the team, I put the team miles before myself and playing or not I want the team to do well and be successful so it’s been a good season up until now.

"Still a lot of improvement and the big games are coming, but it’s nice to come in, get a clean sheet and get a victory. It’s a good one for the fans.

"It’s not about me, it’s about the team, it’s about the club being successful.

"Obviously I want to be a part of it, I’m still playing my part coming on in games, I’ve started four since the World Cup so I’m still getting my minutes, but of course every footballer wants to start games."
