A fan who attended the Colorado Rockies game against the St Louis Cardinals is under police investigation after he tackled a mascot inside the stadium.

The Rockies mascot 'Dinger' was dancing away in front of fans when one supporter decided to encroach from his seat and rugby tackle the employee. Fans were stunned as they watched on, not knowing if it was all part of the act.

But police are now searching for the man as according to TMZ, they believe he committed an assault with his surprising actions. Footage of the incident was captured by another spectator in the crowd at Coors Field, and has since gone viral.

Fans making their way onto the baseball field or other restricted areas is becoming increasingly common, with a Los Angeles Dodgers fan being slammed be security on Opening Day this season. But a Rockies fan is the latest to jump out of their seat, taking aim at the mascot who's dressed as a purple dinosaur.

It's not yet known if the employee was injured as a result of the tackle, but police are still taking matters seriously and are searching for the man. "We are working with our partners at the Colorado Rockies to identify the suspect," a Denver Police Department spokesperson told TMZ on Thursday.

No arrest has been made so far, but following the release of the video the DPD have asked fans to contact Metro Denver Crime Stoppers if they have any useful information. The video posted on Twitter from another fan was captioned: "Boooo, drunk guy. [Love] you, Dinger," suggesting the man may have been intoxicated.

It's not just in baseball where fans decide to rush onto the field or break stadium regulations, but it's happened on multiple occasions already this MLB season. A Dodgers fan ran onto the field to stage a wild proposal for his girlfriend in the crowd, but was quickly tackled by security.

Another fan had an altercation with Los Angeles Angels third baseman Anthony Rendon, to which the MLB star was later suspended for four games. Rendon grabbed a fan who he believed called him a "b****", but later apologised for the incident.

But this is the first time this season that a potential assault has been carried out by a fan on a stadium employee, and police are keen to resolve the incident. The Rockies are yet to speak on the matter, and no fan has come forward.
