Huw Edwards says he is in a race against time to lose a stone before he fronts the Coronation coverage.

The BBC news presenter, who shed three stone in 2019 in a fitness blitz, says the weight has crept back on.

Now the 61-year-old is on a mission to lose the excess pounds before the Coronation on May 6 at Westminster Abbey.

He said: “I am going to have to lose a stone no question. I am just a bit too tight around the waist. So maybe my boxing workouts will now have to go up to two a week… I am now down to one a week, as well as one run a week.”

Viewers have been swooning over Huw since his transformation. But he laughed off whether he was the sexiest man in news, saying his ITV rival newsreader Tom Bradby deserved all the accolades.

“I don’t think I am the sexiest man on television,” Huw joked. “Tom has got a bit of style, hasn’t he? A bit of pizazz, in that way he flirts with the camera. I can’t compete with Tom.”

He previously kept fans up to date with his fitness progress on Instagram, training with ex-boxer Clinton McKenzie, as well as doing TRX.

As well as his desire to lose weight, Huw said he was also fully focused on his work duties but the nerves were kicking in.

Speaking at the RTS Awards, he said: “I’m terrified about the Coronation but I’ve done things before and you have got to tell yourself it is going to be all right. The moment you get slightly carried away with worrying, that is when your system starts to work up, so you have to calm down.”

Huw was celebrating after the BBC was recognised in the Bafta TV and craft nominations for the Queen’s funeral and the Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

The broadcaster’s coverage of the state funeral, including the service from Westminster Abbey, featured commentary from presenters including Huw, Kirsty Young and David Dimbleby, who came out of retirement for the event.
