Call the Midwife star Helen George has revealed that legends from previous series will return to the show for its last ever episode.

There won't be a dry eye in the room as a selection of fan favourites make their big comebacks in the final of the BBC drama, bringing an end to the long-running show.

The actress, who plays Trixie Franklin, has hinted at how the series is planning to end by saying past characters may return.

Call the Midwife has been on our screens since 2012 and has a long list of iconic cast members, including Miranda Hart, Jenny Agutter and Charlotte Ritchie.

The period drama follows a group of midwives working in the East End of London in the 1950s.

Helen, 38, has said plans on how to end the show have already been discussed.

"We've talked about that, wouldn't it be nice? Like at the end of Titanic, all the characters come and it's just beautiful. It would have been amazing to have everybody," she told RadioTimes.

"Look, you'll have to wait and see. But it'll be nice at some point – maybe at the end of the very, very last series – to get some of the old faces back, for sure."

Fans will have to wait in anticipation to see if Helen is right, as the popular series is still due to remain on air in 2024 and 2025.

It means the earliest possible chance to catch the epic final reunion will be in 2025 if bosses axe the show, or 2026 if it is brought back for another series.

In the latest series of Call the Midwife, fans fretted Trixie and Matthew would quit after tying the knot in the season finale.

But, Helen George, Olly Rix, Judy Parfitt and Zephryn Taitte will all be back as Trixie, Matthew, Monica Joan and Cyril for series 13.

Filming is due to start in spring and Helen said she was delighted the series had been ordered for another two runs, taking the action to 1971 for series 15.
