The David Carrick case is beyond horrifying.
As details emerged in court this week, the true scale of his terrible crimes became clear.
His sentence, due next month, should be suitably harsh and reflect the damage he has done to the lives of so many women.
And it must reflect the fallout on public trust in those who are supposed to protect us.
Along with the pain he has put these women through, Carrick’s monstrous behaviour has again shone a light on the problems in the police.

Carrick and other recent cases have exposed systemic failings in the whole service, not just the Met.

We see it in the leaked WhatsApp messages, the sexist language and macho nicknames to which so many have turned a blind eye.
More and more, we are seeing it in the dock.
For a long time, senior officers have pledged to end this culture. They haven’t. We cannot allow more empty words and no action.
One victim of Carrick’s is now preparing to take legal action.
Maybe a high-profile, expensive lawsuit is the way.
It will be difficult, of course, for the victim reliving their horrific experience. Money will be welcome but justice is all-important. What’s at stake is vital.
