Erik ten Hag reckons that accountability and honesty have set the Manchester United juggernaut back on course.

Ten Hag is a stereotypical Dutchman when he talks, in that he pulls no punches. And he is keen, too, for his players to tell it like it is when they speak in the dressing-room and in public. That transparency, he believes, will stand United in good stead as the club look to a brighter future.

And certainly the evidence on the field points towards him being right. Ten Hag said: “All I want to bring in is a culture for high standards and values, and also accountability and transparency and honesty are the kind of values I want to set, I want to control.

“That is the way we have to co-operate internally but also externally, so with the media and the fans. The Premier League at this moment develops and you have six or seven teams who can all finally win the league, because there are so many investments.

“And when you have the right philosophy, the right strategy, many more clubs can compete for positions, for the top positions in the league.

“So that’s a great challenge and if you want to be there you have to be really good, you need that consistency, that good strategy and you need hard work to compete there. And if you want to win trophies, everything has to go in the right way.

“I’m quite confident of that process. We are in the right direction, so it also means that we have to improve a lot if you want to compete in the future for the top positions, because the competition will be really tough.”

One player whose uplift in form points to the Ten Hag effect working its magic is Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Ten Hag added: “He is picking up the coaching and he is making good progress from the start of the season.

“He was in a bad situation because he was not fit, he had a lot of injuries, a couple of illnesses in the first half of the season and things changed after the break, or during the break.

“He worked well in the pre-season before the second half of the season, in the training camp, and then some good performances in the games, and he is making some good progress. Against Crystal Palace on Wednesday, he was one of our best players.”
