The aircraft is said to have crashed into an industrial estate shortly after 9am in Derbyshire earlier today - with the pilot tragically killed and his family informed

Police have sealed off roads after a light aircraft crashed into an industrial estate in Derbeyshire this morning, killing the pilot.

The aircraft, believed to be an Evektor SportStar built in 2022, is said to have crashed shortly after 9am in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, earlier today. The family of the pilot who tragically died have been informed, and he was reportedly the only person on board the plane. 

Members of the public have been asked to avoid the area while officers investigate the circumstances behind the crash. Roads in the area are also currently closed.

A spokesperson for Derbyshire Police said: "We are currently dealing with a light aircraft that came down on land off Sheepbridge Lane, Chesterfield earlier this morning.

The incident happened just after 9am today. Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service and East Midlands Ambulance Service are also at the scene. Roads in the immediate area are closed and will remain shut for some time while the investigation into the circumstances continues."

A spokesperson for Derbyshire Fire and Rescue said: "Emergency Services are currently dealing with a light aircraft that has come down on Sheepbridge Lane, Chesterfield. 

"Fire control operators received a call at 09.05 hours today (Sunday September 1) and mobilised fire crews from Chesterfield, Clay Cross and Staveley Fire Stations to the scene. Colleagues from Derbyshire police and East Midlands Ambulance Service are also in attendance.

"People are asked to avoid the area while emergency services deal with the incident."

Fire service crews said they left the scene at 11.30am and handed over to Derbyshire Constabulary, although the investigation will be managed by the Air Accident Investigation Bureau.

According to flight tracking website Flightradar24, the aircraft took off from Coal Aston airfield, near Dronfield. It is a two-seater plane believed to be an Evektor SportStar built in 2022, and is typically used by flight schools.
