Phillip Schofield has slammed the church as “out of touch” as the Church of England rules against performing same-sex marriages.

It comes after six years of consultations to decide whether to change the religious teachings to allow bishops to conduct gay marriage services in church.

The 60-year-old presenter made a passionate speech against this decision on This Morning, as he labelled the bishops “a bunch of out of touch dinosaurs" in a debate on Thursday's show.

Phillip came out as gay in February 2020 live on air, after being married to his wife Stephanie for 27 years and having two daughters together.

The presenter and his co-host Holly Willoughby went onto suggest that the church “would die” and “choke itself to death” if it doesn’t evolve, and recognise that “love is love.”

Phil shared: “I’ve got a friend of mine who is very, very religious and gets an enormous amount of support, spirituality and togetherness from that community.”

He added: “But eventually the more out of step you are with the population and modern Britain, the more you’ll choke yourselves to death and you’ll have no reason to be there.”

The presenters added that the 1% of the population who still attend church on Sundays, will dwindled down to nothing if the church doesn’t change.

Guest, Isla Traquair added that she also “strongly opposed” this decision, as her ex-husband is gay and happily married and it’s an experience everyone should have a right to.

She explained: “My ex-husband is married to a man, we’re all great friends. I love him, I love his husband and they kind of eloped to get married.

She added: “I would have given him away, I would have walked him up the isle.”
