Malta’s elite shaken by corruption charges

The journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia was murdered by a car bomb near her home in Malta more than six years ago, but the repercussions of her reporting continue to shake Maltese society.

This week corruption charges were brought against the head of the country’s central bank, the deputy prime minister and Joseph Muscat, the former prime minister, among many others, in connection with a 2015 deal over the running of three hospitals.

Caruana Galizia first drew attention to the “shady deal” in her widely-read blog.

Another associate of Muscat, Yorgen Fenech, who had been linked by Caruana Galizia to a different corruption scandal over a gas plant, is awaiting trial for being complicit in her murder, a crime which outraged the Maltese public and the international community.

Muscat, who denies the charges, stepped down as prime minister in 2019 and is now chair of the Malta Premier League.
