Greggs has announced a major spring menu shake-up with pasta pots and rice bowls now available as the high street chain vows to give customers "healthier" choices.

The high street bakery chain will be introducing two brand new menu items to its menu - as well as bringing back a few old favourites with some new recipes. The six menu items are launching as a part of Gregg's Balanced Choice range and will be available in all stores stores nationwide from Thursday, March 14.

The Balanced Choice range gives customers to option of a more so-called "healthier" option with the items being less than 400 calories and green or amber on the nutritional traffic light system. One option as part of its lighter lunch range is the Piri Piri Chicken Pasta which is tossed in a spicy mayonnaise style dressing with sweetcorn and topped with Piri Piri style chicken breast slices.

This lunchtime dish will set you back £3.25 and is 358 calories. Another option is the Pesto and Mozzarella Pasta pot which Greggs says is a "taste of the Mediterranean". This dish is simply pasta in a pesto dressing with slow-roasted tomatoes, peppers and spinach topped with mozzarella pearls - costing £3.25, with a calorie count of 375.

Items returning to the menu from tomorrow with improved recipes include the Sweet Potato Bhaji and Rice, Smoky Cajun Rice with BBQ Chicken and Sweetcorn Fritters, Feta and Tomato Pasta and Chicken and Bacon Pasta.

The Feta and Tomato Pasta is a mixture of cooked pasta in a tomato and basil dressing with Feta cheese, peppers, roasted red onion and sliced spinach costing £2.25 and is 363 calories. And finally, the is the Chicken and Bacon Pasta has a mayonnaise style dressing, with sweetcorn, tomato and smoked bacon pieces topped with barbeque flavour chicken. This dish will set you back £3.25 and has 380 calories.

The Sweet Potato Baji and Rice - costing £3.35 with 267 calories - is made up of a combination of cooked long grain rice and grain mix alongside spinach, coriander, chickpeas, peppers and onions with an Indian-style chana masala sauce. This dish is served with sweet potato onion bhajis.

Finally, the Smoky Cajun Rice with BBQ Chicken and Sweetcorn Fritters consists of cooked rice mixed with roasted peppers, sweetcorn, roasted red onion with a smoky paprika dressing - with added BBQ flavour chicken slices, sweetcorn fritters and sliced spinach. This will set you back £3.35 and has 271 calories.

The pasta pots and rice bowls are all available as part of the cold sandwich or salad deal, which includes any hot or cold drink from £3.75. The spring menu can also be ordered via Click + Collect through the Greggs App or website, and for delivery via Just Eat or Uber Eats.
