American Fiction is now available to stream at home after its win at the 96th Academy Awards on Sunday (March 10). The satirical comedy-drama earned the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar, with writer-director Cord Jefferson taking home the award for his feature debut.
Based on Percival Everett’s 2001 novel Erasure, the Jeffrey Wright-led film confronts our culture’s obsession with reducing people to outrageous stereotypes. As per its official synopsis, American Fiction follows Thelonious “Monk” Ellison (Wright), a frustrated novelist who’s fed up with the establishment profiting from “Black” entertainment that relies on tired and offensive tropes.
To prove his point, Monk uses a pen name to write an outlandish “Black” book of his own that propels him to the heart of hypocrisy and the madness he claims to disdain. Alongside Wright, the film stars Tracee Ellis Ross, Erika Alexander, Adam Brody and Sterling K. Brown.
