Jimmy Kimmel hosts this year's star-studded Oscars, held in Los Angeles.

The 96th Academy Awards will take place on Sunday, March 10, and Kimmel's payment will add to his staggering $50million fortune. But have you ever wondered how much stars are paid for hosting such a prestigious Hollywood awards ceremony?

It's probably less than you expected, and it's often thought that celebrities accept the job purely for the honour of hosting the glitzy bash, ignoring the fee. It might interest you to know that Jimmy makes around $15million per year for hosting Jimmy Kimmel Live!

So how much are Oscars hosts paid?

Jimmy has been very vocal about this in the past, revealing the exact sum he was paid to present the Academy Awards all the way back in 2018. An article in the Hollywood Reporter back in 2013 suggested hosts should be paid between $15,000 and $25,000.

Kimmel told viewers six years ago that he made the bottom of that scale, admitting: "I got paid $15,000 to host the Oscars." It's less than the minimum amount paid to hosts of the Emmys, who are reportedly given around $20,000 for the annual ceremony.

Potential pay row?

It was when Jimmy discussed his salary that another former host admitted they were paid "scale", which is essentially minimum wage for SAG-AFTRA union members. Kimmell says his $15,000 fee was "less than" the scale amount.

Wanda Sykes co-hosted the 2022 ceremony alongside Regina Hall and Amy Schumer, and Sykes said it pretty much costed them to take the job. "I was really excited about [hosting], but then I realized that out of all the jobs that I have, this one is actually gonna cost me money," she told Kimmel that year on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

Quizzed on her salary, she said: "I don't even know; it’s, like, scale probably." Jimmy quipped: "It's less than that. I got paid $15,000 and there’s one of me! You guys will probably have to split that. You're getting robbed, you know what?"

The 2024 Oscars will be broadcast live from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. It is already known that Angela Bassett, Mel Brooks and Carol Littleton will be celebrated with honorary awards, with a whole host of other famous faces nominated.

The ceremony will celebrate the best of on-screen talent and features from the year 2023, hence why they're called the 2023 awards, despite the ceremony being held in 2024.
