Woman's cleaning trick shows how dirty your 'clean' bathroom towels really are

It appears we aren't as good at washing and laundry as we initially thought.

You'd like to think your towels are kept clean and fresh after washing - but one woman has stunned people after sharing how much dirt can cling on, even after washing.

She proved that dirt and grime can lurk on towels, as her husband shared her clever trick online to prove just how dirty they can be, and it's left people seriously grossed out.

Jared Guynes was shocked to see how much dirt came out of the towels he stated were freshly cleaned, and took to Facebook to reveal the grim results. He uploaded a photo of a bath full of murky brown water and urged others that their towels are "probably this nasty too".

His wife had watched a YouTube video about 'towel stripping' for a deep clean back in 2020, mixing Arm & Hammer baking soda, borax, Oxi Clean, and hot water in a bathtub before letting the towels soak overnight. Jared wrote at the time: "In this case she took our collection of clean towels, let me say that again, the towels were totally clean, washed and folded and in the linen closet, completely clean, completely normal.

"The story that she told me is that over the years of use, microscopic amounts of soap and detergent get locked in to the fibres of the towels.

"Subsequently that stuff gets gummed up and can also trap microscopic amounts of dirt and grime and bacteria, even after going through the washing machine with detergent.

"So after seeing someone else do it she decided to do the experiment on our own towels here in the tub."

He said he was "literally freaking out right now" after seeing what came out of the towels he had been using and he wasn't alone, News.com.au reports.

The Facebook posts gained more than 30,000 comments as people said they: "OMG! I need to clean my towels now!" - as others worried about the state of towels in hotels.

Some argued the mixture had simply stripped the colour out of the towels rather than hidden dirt, writing: "It's a chemical that brought most of the dye out of the towels."

But one replied to say: "I've done it with pure white clothes and gotten this result."

Another commented on the post saying the grime wouldn't build up if towels were washed on a higher temperature, saying: "If you wash your clothing and towels properly each time, stripping is unnecessary and this won't happen. This is what happens when you always wash on 30/quick wash – minging!"
