The Oscars' Best Picture winner could be affected by coffee

Coffee not only has the power to help people get through their daily lives but also the ability to predict which Hollywood film wins Best Picture at the Oscars.

Films that have scenes with coffee have statistically done better at the Academy Awards. In fact, when a film features coffee, its chances of winning an Oscar are raised by 26.6 per cent. Plus, the more times coffee appears in a film, the better its chances are. Eight is the magic number, meaning a film will perform best if it features coffee eight times.

Delving into specifics, brands do have an impact on how well the film will perform. Specifically, Starbucks coffee has the best odds, increasing a film's likelihood to win by 20.3 per cent. Folgers follows closely behind with 19. 3 per cent just ahead of Hilltop with 18.1 per cent.

All in all, one third of Oscar winning films have featured coffee, according to a study from Cafely. Among all the Oscar-winning films in the show's vast history, coffee has appeared over 2,000 times. This goes to show the statistic may not be entirely coincidental and that movie goers may actually give preference to a film that features their favorite beverage.

With that said, coffee could be used to predict which film will take away Best Picture this year at the 96th Annual Academy Awards. Based on the number of coffee scenes in the movies nominated for this year's big category, one film's coffee statistics blow the other films' away.

Barbie and Past Lives only featured one scene with coffee. Only slightly ahead of those with two caffeine scenes are Maestreo, Anatomy of a Fall, Oppenheimer and The Holdovers.

The Zone of Interest comes closer with three coffee scenes. Poor Things and American Fiction both show promise with four coffee features.

However, one film holds a clear lead. According to coffee, Killers of the Flower Moon will win Best Picture. The film has six scenes featuring the caffeinated beverage.

How coffee has predicted past Oscar winners

Over the past 20 years, coffee has been featured an average of one-third of the Oscar winning films. Interestingly enough, the percentage of Oscar winning films that feature coffee per year has not gone below 18 per cent or 11 scenes - across all of the categories.

This means that at least since 2002, at least one category winner every year has a coffee scene. On top of that, the most coffee-filled Oscars was 2011 with 94 per cent of the nominated films containing coffee scenes. 2016 falls closely behind with 86 per cent followed by 2009 with 83 per cent.

Some years had an astronomical number of coffee appearances within each Oscars nominated film including 2013 with 400 appearances, 2015 with 412 appearances, 2018 with 447 appearances, 2019 with 477 appearances and 2020 with 467 appearances.

However, 2022 has by far broken the record with a whopping 1,202 coffee features.
