Creme Eggs are a must-have Easter treat, but very few know how Cadbury creates its fondant 'yolk'.

Originally known as Fry's Creme Eggs, the nation's favourite chocolate first launched back in 1923, and was renamed almost 50 years later in 1971. Now, Brits gobble down around 400 million individually wrapped Creme Eggs each year.

Famous for their gooey fondant centre, little is known about the choccies and debate remains on the correct way to eat them (is it ever acceptable to finger your chocolate?). However, the chocolate giant recently confirmed it uses an unusual ingredient you may have in your kitchen to create its vibrant yellow centre.

On a visit to Cadbury HQ in Bournville, a spokesperson for the company told Daily Star the yolk gets it colour from 'paprika'. Yes, the spice you probably pop into your homemade curries and chilis is also used in Creme Eggs.

Whilst this may surprise you, the answer has always been right in front of us. Just check the ingredients list and you'll see 'Colouring (paprika extract)' right at the end. Yummy! The egg white fondants also contains real dried egg whites, as well as sugar syrup.

And it turns out many Creme Egg fans didn't know. One person took to X, formerly Twitter, to ask: "What the h**l is paprika extract doing in a Creme Egg?," to which one person informed: "It's for colouring - I suspect it's used for the yolk!". Many were baffled at this, with one person writing: "The mind boggles...," while another said: "Yes, I can't even look at them..."

If you prefer your chocolate a little more boozy, Aldi is launching a Baileys-inspired drink that tastes just like Creme Eggs. The budget supermarket says its Ballycastle Chocolate Crème has 'delicate hints of chocolate and vanilla' and is best served 'near with ice, or as part of an egg-ceptional chocco-inspired cocktail'.

The indulgent tipple will debut on March 14 and will only be available for a limited item. It is priced at £7.69 for a 70cl bottle - and fans cannot wait. "We need to try this," one user wrote online. "Oh my god I'm getting this," said another. While a third added: "I've already done an Aldi run today to try and find it."
