A man was arrested during Sunday's Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium after a fan was seen allegedly mocking the Munich air disaster.

The fan, who was in attendance for the highly anticipated match between Manchester City and Manchester United, was seen making an aeroplane gesture with his arms. The video of his actions quickly went viral on social media before police intervened.

It is alleged that the gesture was made to mock the Munich Air Disaster: a tragic incident that saw eight Manchester United players lose their lives in 1958. Twenty-three people were fatally injured as a result of the plane crash.

Another clip showing police officers intervening was also shared on social media. It was later confirmed by Greater Manchester Police that a man had been arrested following reports from others in the crowd.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said on Sunday evening: "During the Manchester derby, officers arrested a man on suspicion of tragedy chanting. Following reports made in the crowd, the man was promptly arrested by our officers."

The Manchester Evening News has reported that Manchester City are aware of the incident. They have also outlined that City issue stadium bans to any offenders who are identified. Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) guidance was amended last year in a bid to clamp down on tragedy chanting.

Manchester City came from behind to win Sunday's match following a rousing second-half fightback. Phil Foden scored twice to cancel out Marcus Rashford's opener before Erling Haaland scored a third goal in additional time.
