A nursery where a baby boy died has told parents it may not be able to give them refunds despite closing down.

The one-year-old child's death - which occurred on December 9 last year - is being treated as suspicious by police.

Further testing is still required to establish the exact cause of death.

Six women have been arrested and bailed as part of the investigation.

Despite this, director Steff Latewood said she hopes to re-open one of the sites as soon as possible.

In a message to parents she also apologised for the lack of communication with families who had kids at the nursery.

"Things have spiralled out of all control and we have been left numb, alone and unsure what to do," she said, reports BirminghamLive.

Referring to the investigation, she added: "We have done everything asked of us by all involved."

Ms Latewood went on to say with no money coming in, it is unclear if refunds can be given.

She explained: "We are currently not receiving any money from anywhere so at this time are not sure if or when we can offer refunds.

"We will continue to look at this with insurers etc but they are working very slowly."

She assured parents that the senior team "have always done the best to keep your children safe".

"So please believe this and if we have received complaints WE have always dealt with them in most cases successfully and happily with parents," Ms Latewood added.

She said they are also trying "really hard" to get any outstanding belongings back to the rightful owners.

"I am truly sorry if this doesn't answer questions but we really cannot tell you anything else at the moment," she continued.

"When this is over we will be able to speak more clearly to you all as we appreciate you and staff miss you all."

Three women, aged 20, 23 and 50, were arrested on December 16 on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter.
