New Fire TV Stick crackdown blocks from popular apps - check your settings now

If you have a Fire TV Stick stuck in the rear of your TV and have suddenly found some apps are no longer working you aren't alone. It appears that Amazon has released a fresh update to its Fire OS-powered streaming devices that is stopping a swathe of third-party software from working.

The update now blocks apps from a function called Android Debug Bridge (ADB). It's pretty geeky but this basically allows app developers to access software controls and in-depth settings that aren't normally available.

The changes, which were first spotted by the team at AFTVnews, have been implemented by Amazon for security reasons with the firm saying, "We implemented a software update to protect customer security. We are aware of reports that some apps have been impacted by a recent security update. If developers have questions, they can contact their Amazon Fire TV Appstore representative."

Many of the apps that no longer work, which include ways to clear cache, boost memory and play gaming emulators, also often allow users to avoid seeing Amazon's Fire TV homepage. It's not clear if this is another reason why they have been blocked but with adverts and premium streaming services shown on this page, that's probably not something Amazon is overly keen on.

“Apps commonly used by the Fire TV modding community will often use local ADB connections to detect remote button presses. That detection allows the use of alternate home screens," AFTVnews explained.

"Most likely, this change is a way for Amazon to protect its Fire TV home screen from being bypassed and, in turn, to protect its profits."

There's no word on how many apps have been affected and how long it will take developers to tweak things so they work again but it's clearly a bit frustrating for users who may now find some things are no longer available on their devices.

If your Fire TV Stick or Fire-powered TV is now running version Fire OS 7.6.6.9 then you will be impacted by the changes. To check which version you are running head to the Settings menu.

Then select My Fire TV or Device & Software, tap About and select Check for System Update.
