Next month's Merseyside Derby is set to be rescheduled after Liverpool reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup - and were drawn against Manchester United.

Liverpool's youth-inspired 3-0 victory over Southampton on Wednesday set up a mouth-watering clash with United, who themselves made it through following an unconvincing 1-0 win away to Nottingham Forest. The quarter-final ties are due to be played on the weekend of Saturday, March 16, but due to Liverpool's participation in the Europa League, it's all but certain that the two north-west heavyweights will meet on the Sunday or Monday.

That weekend was due to see Liverpool face Everton at Goodison Park for potentially the final time, but the Premier League fixture is now expected to be shifted to later in the season. Manchester City are also in the quarter-finals and will have their trip to Brighton rescheduled, and even though Arsenal are already out of the FA Cup, they were set host Chelsea on quarter-final weekend.

That means Arsenal will be afforded a lengthy break ahead of facing City at the Etihad on March 31. The three Premier League games are likely to be rescheduled for April, squeezed in at a crucial point when Arsenal, City and Liverpool aren't playing European fixtures.

Klopp's Liverpool are still in with a chance of ending the campaign with four trophies and his 10th trip to Old Trafford will be his penultimate one before leaving the club in May, as United will also welcome Liverpool on Sunday, April 7 for a league game. Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag won his one and only home game against Liverpool back in August 2022.

United legend Wayne Rooney was a BBC pundit for the Red Devils' win against Forest and he said of facing Liverpool: "That's a great motivation for this Manchester United team.

"To play Liverpool at any time is a big occasion, of course, but to play them in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup is a big opportunity for them to make a statement and try and go one better than they have done last season."

Klopp, meanwhile, told ITV after his side beat Southampton: "It's great to be in the quarter-finals and we don’t take these things for granted. We deserved to go through, it was a top, top performance."
