Mum fed up as partner picks baby name she's 'not sure about' - and won't budge

Choosing a baby name isn't always easy.

If you and your partner have differing views on baby names, then settling on one you both like can be a nightmare. You need to have a certain level of compromise between both parties if you both have completely different tastes and eventually, you should be able to find a name you can agree on.

However, this hasn't been the case for one mum, who has said she isn't keen on the name her partner keeps suggesting - but he won't listen to her ideas. She explained her other half is "Roman Empire obsessed" and wants to choose a historical name, but she is more of a fan of "whimsical" monikers.

Her partner has said he wants to name their daughter Aurelia, but she said she's "not sure about" the moniker because she thinks people will find it hard to spell and pronounce. But whenever she tries to offer other suggestions, her partner tells her they "don't need a shortlist" of names because he has "already given the name he likes".

In a post on Reddit, the mum-to-be said: "I'm currently 29 weeks with our first baby and have been on and off discussing names with my partner. From the start, he has always wanted to name our daughter Aurelia (he's very Roman Empire-obsessed).

"We have very different tastes in names with him liking older style names, often with links to the Romans (think Sylvia or Valeria). I like flower names or slightly whimsical names like Poppy, Willow, and Violet. He has basically said he doesn't like colour names, flower names (which is amusing to me given Valeria and Aurelia both have links to plants) or generally anything that has another meaning/purpose.

"I do like the name Aurelia but am worried it is difficult to spell/pronounce and I am not really keen on any of the nicknames/shortened versions that come along with it. Partner has been difficult and is shooting down any name that I suggest. He says we only need one name and he doesn't need a short list because he has given the name he likes."

The woman said she is already compromising on her daughter's last name because she will be taking her dad's surname, so the deal they had was that she would have "the final say" on the baby's first name. However, she's now concerned that if she doesn't name her daughter Aurelia, it will "cause an issue" in their relationship.

She added: "Bubba will have the middle name May after my Grandmother and his last name even though we aren't married and I did want the same last name as baby. The compromise is that I have the final say on the first name, however, he says he doesn't like anything other than Aurelia and he's fed up with rehashing the same names.

"I'm worried if I name the baby something other than Aurelia it is going to cause an issue in our relationship however I don't want to feel forced into a name I'm not sold on!"

Commenters on the post told the woman to hold her ground, as no parent should be forced to choose a name they're not keen on for their baby. One person said: "If you're not 100% sold on the name, go with a different name. A name should be decided upon mutually, and your partner should respect that."

While another wrote: "Your partner sounds very immature. If you don’t love the name - do not choose it," and a third posted: "Saying that you can have the final say on the first name but providing only one name to decide from isn't a compromise. Either he gets Aurelia and you get the last name, or you get to veto Aurelia."
