High street banks are set to close 49 branches next month, in another blow for millions of Brits who rely on face-to-face banking.

Barclays is set to shut 18 branches next month, while Halifax will close the doors permanently on 13 sites. Lloyds will shut seven locations, NatWest will close six and Ulster Bank will get rid of five branches.

Banking giants have blamed more people using online services for the closures. Which? research shows banks and building societies have closed 5,835 branches since January 2015, at a rate of around 54 each month. There are already 249 closures scheduled for 2024.

If your local branch is closing, you can do some basic cash or counter services at your nearest Post Office - for example, if you need to pay in cash and cheques, make withdrawals and check your balance. Some banks also now run pop-up branches or vans, but you'll need to check online to see when one is due to visit your town.
