A £20 spray which claims to prevent dog bites has been mocked and compared to “Lynx Africa” by doubters.

Canine Shield is nontoxic, eco-friendly and solely made of corn powder. Designed to deter a dog from attacking if they charge towards humans, it emits a powder mist along with a hissing sound to startle and scare the dog away – giving people the chance to get away. It can only be sprayed for seven seconds as the can will be depleted afterwards. A bottle costs £27.99 but it is currently on sale for £19.99 on their website.

The listing reads: “Canine Shield represents a powdered spray designed to discourage canine aggression or an attack due to the visuals from the yellow powder being sprayed and the hissing sound emitted from the can. It is designed to spray a yellow powder plume along with administering a hissing sound that can startle and scare a dog off giving the individual time to get away to safety.

“It uses compressed air to imitate natural warning sounds found in the wild and the yellow plume is to create a distraction. This product is not harmful and is not to be sprayed directly in the animal's face.”

However, before concerned people rush out to buy a bottle, the website adds: “We can not guarantee this product will stop an attacking dog.”

Yusuf said: “Who’s got time to be carrying air freshener around.” Justin Walker joked: “Who’s expecting to get attacked by a dog.” Yet one added: “I’m buying loads.”

Earlier this month a five-year-old child was left with life changing injuries when they were attacked by a dog in Rochdale. The youngster was seriously hurt in the attack by a lone dog at an address in the Greater Manchester town on February 16. The child was rushed to hospital with witnesses saying an air ambulance landed nearby.

Greater Manchester Police said in a statement: "On Sunday 11 February 2024, at around 2.40pm, officers were called to reports of a dog bite at an address on Broad Lane, Rochdale. A five-year-old child received serious injuries requiring hospital treatment, with these injuries thought to be life-changing.”
