Monty Don breaks silence on leaving Gardeners' World as he shares health news

BBC Gardeners' World host Monty Don has addressed speculation about him leaving the show.

In a conversation with Times Radio last year, Monty hinted that he might leave the show saying, "The logical thing to do is give up Gardeners' World." However, it appears that fans have got their wires crossed with his remarks. The TV star said: "In the end, I'm a gardener and my life is lived in my garden."

Monty shared his thoughts about his connection with the gardening programme recently saying: "Being able to share that through Gardeners' World is not only a privilege, but it's also completely central to who I am and what I do."

In the same interview, he discussed his mental health struggles, sharing: "I have, for many years, suffered from depression, which comes and goes but tends to be something that is worse in the winter."

Though Monty feels 'fine' at present, he added: "I wouldn't say I have been healed. I'd say I am being healed. It's an ongoing process," he revealed to Radio Times.

Monty was talking ahead of his new programme, Monty Don's Spanish Gardens, which airs on BBC Two on February 23. He refers to making the series as 'an exhilarating and fascinating experience'.

"This was filmed last year when I spent seven weeks in Spain across April, May, June and October and covers over 40 different gardens right across Spain," he shared on his website. "I found it an exhilarating and fascinating experience with stunning gardens and learned so much more about the country - despite having visited many times before as a tourist. It looks incredible and hope you find it as entertaining and rewarding watching it as I did making it."

The new show comes out soon after the garden expert said that he got told off for 'behaving differently on camera' with his wife Sarah while talking about his TV work on the podcast White Wine Question Time. Monty said that when filming a new show with his wife, one of the directors told him he wasn't being "natural" on TV with her.

"He said, 'I don't know if I can continue doing this', and I said, 'What? What are you talking about?' and he said, 'Because you really can't do what you can do. And it's too frustrating," he shared.

"And I said, 'I really don't know what you're talking about.' And he said, 'You're a presenter. You're not being natural. You're projecting too much. The whole point of this programme is to be natural - you and Sarah at home. It's what you do. Why are you behaving differently on camera?'"
