Israel Adesanya shows devastation in reaction to Alex Volkanovski's UFC defeat

Israel Adesanya was left speechless as he watched teammate Alex Volkanovski lose his UFC world title to Ilia Topuria.

UFC featherweight champion Volkanovski was looking to make the sixth defence of his belt against unbeaten challenger Topuria this past weekend in California. Volkanovski walked out with Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg for the fight, something that Adesanya found hilarious in footage of him watching the fight on his YouTube channel.

“Good lad Volk, good lad Volk, good defence,” Adesanya said. Things were going to plan in the for Volkanovski as he landed more strikes than Topuria with all three judges' scoring the first round in his favour. “Southpaw look at that, shimmy shimmy ya, masterful. Good distance, go back in there and give it to him," Adesanya added.

Topuria then closed the show in the second round by landing a right hook in the second round that put Volkanovski down, with referee Jason Herzog stepping in after several follow-up shots. Adesanya was devastated as he put his hands on his head in despair and there were gasps amongst his friends who were also watching the fight.

One of Adesanya's friends then pointed out that Volkanovski made a mistake by putting his back on the cage. “He couldn’t get him there, but then he threw like four or five punches and which one caught him? He fifth one? It’s all good Volk," Adesanya replied. Volkanovski wants to rematch Topuria later in the year and is confident he can make the adjustments to avenge his defeat.

“I always break down fights when I win so I’m going to break them down when I lose. This is a crazy game we play, you can’t win them all. Sometimes you're the hammer and sometimes you're the nail. Last night I was the nail, but I’ve been the hammer many times. I thought I was doing great but Ilia got the job done. After I backed up, he caught me," Volkanovski said.

“Next time it will be different, I definitely want that rematch but I’m going to have a little bit of rest now. Spain I’m hearing is going to happen, Ilia wants that too. That probably won’t be until later in the year so the timing is perfect. We’ll make it right on my end, I’m going to get that belt back, mark my words. I’ll be back."
