Loved-up Brits are being encouraged to look after their Valentine's flowers with a special ingredient to make them last longer.

Following the most romantic day of the year, many loved-up couples, those with secret admirers or crushes, or Galentine's dates will have received bunches of flowers from someone who cares about them. While a bouquet undeniably looks beautiful, traditional Valentine's flowers such as roses don't typically last long.

So, it's worth preparing them for longer life. Gardening experts have offered their top tips for preserving your stunning flowers for longer.

‌Chris Bonnett from GardeningExpress.co.uk said: "Unfortunately cut flowers don't last forever, so to extend the life of your loved one's nice gesture, make sure to take care of the blooms properly."

He added: "Just putting the flowers in water is not enough if you want to make them last longer, it's also important to cut the stems, change the water regularly and feed them with flower food."

‌The gardening expert said you should start by trimming the stems and leaves before placing them in a clean vase with water. He said: "Start with a clean vase to prevent the growth of bacteria. Wash the vase with soap and water before placing the flowers in it. The vase should be filled halfway up with lukewarm water, as cold water can shock the flowers."

Expert Chris also said adding an usual ingredient into the water could help kill bacteria - vodka. While alcohol can often be expensive, Tesco has small bottles available for £6.80.

He explained: "‌People may also be surprised to hear it but adding a dash of vodka to the water can also keep your flowers fresh for longer by removing any unwanted bacteria off of the stems.

"Other factors such as the type of vase we keep them in and the temperature of the room and water also make a difference in the longevity of your beautiful blooms."

Adding a spoonful of vodka into the water can also help act as an antibacterial agent and help promote healthy overall growth. It also slows down the production of ethylene which is the gas that causes flowers to wilt.

The gardening expert added that re-cutting the stems and adding food or preservatives frequently could help flowers last longer. It's also important to pay attention to where you place the vase, keeping the flowers away from heat sources and draughts.

Cut flowers thrive in a cooler environment, so it's best to keep them away from direct sunlight. You should also avoid placing the flowers near heat sources, fans or draughts.
