Wayne Rooney insists his focus is on getting back into football after confirming he was approached by Misfits to take part in a celebrity fight.
The former Manchester United and England striker held talks with the outfit backed by YouTube star KSI and promoted by Kalle Sauerland which Mirror Sport revealed on Wednesday. But Rooney has now addressed his next career move on Gary Neville ’s ‘Stick to Football’ podcast.
Rooney, 38, was asked by Gary Neville, “are you going to do a fight?” He said: “Never know. No, erm they’ve been in touch and asked the question but at the minute I want to focus on getting back into management, not boxing.”
Jamie Carragher, who features on the podcast alongside Neville, Roy Keane and Ian Wright, then asked if it was a “charity thing”?
Rooney said: “No they’ve just been in touch to fight. There’s been a few, that Misfits has been in and that’s been all over the news or whatever, .

Rooney has been out of work since last month when he was sacked by Birmingham after just 15 games in charge. He has also had stints in charge of DC United in the MLS and with Derby County in the Championship after an illustrious playing career which saw him shine at Everton and Manchester United.
The former United and Everton front man has always been a keen boxing fan and was even a member of an amateur club as a kid in his hometown of Liverpool.
Rooney once walked out with Ricky Hatton for the Manchester fighter’s clash with Jose Luis Castillo in Las Vegas back in 2007 while he has been ringside for other major fights.
He previously messaged Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn and jokingly asked him to set up a fight. He’s also been in touch with KSI before about facing him which the YouTube personality revealed back in December 2022.
The Misfits discussions were serious this time but it now appears that Rooney has opted to stay involved in football.
