After breaking up with somebody, the last thing you want to do is bump into them in the shops or when dining out. But if you continue to live in the same area as your ex, then you can't prevent it from ever happening. Wanting to prepare for this exact situation, one concern singleton took to DC Urban Moms to ask whether anyone had encountered an ex-lover and if they had, how the interaction played out.

They said: "[Were] any emotions stirred up?." In response, some people said yes they had and it had not been a terrible experience, but no heartstrings had been plucked, while others said it had been awful and some said the meeting had stirred up old feelings, in some cases, that were then carried through to there being a renewed romantic relationship.

One person said that it had been no big deal because it wasn’t a bitter break-up and it was a good reminder of how lucky they were, while another explained that they encountered their college girlfriend about "13 years ago at a mall", when both of them were in their mid-fifties. He said that during their relationship they had been faithful to each other for more than five years, but ended up splitting before going on to marry other partners.

They said: "She was widowed (only about five months) and I was in a divorce, but had been separated for over a year. I can't say there were sparks but there was concern and understanding on both our parts. We met for coffee about a week later and resumed our friendship. We began officially dating after about 10 months and got married after four years. Life can be unpredictable."

Another person recounted how they had seen an ex at a store a long way from the college where they had become involved, but the encounter did not go well. They said: "I was in line at Best Buy about 15 years ago when my college girlfriend walked in. This was in a town 2,000 miles from our college. She did not see me so I stood at the door waiting for her to exit. When she did, she saw me. She turned white and kept walking. We never spoke."

Another poster, answering that post, said they assumed that the relationship had ended badly and he explained: "Yeah. She cheated and I moved out. Three years we lived together. I've since heard through the grapevine that her marriage ended because she cheated."
