Gary Neville tore into a "pathetic" moment featuring Andre Onana and John McGinn that left both Manchester United and Aston Villa fans scratching their heads.

During the first half of the Red Devils' win over Aston Villa on Sunday, the latter were awarded a free-kick on the left flank. McGinn assumed responsibility.

The Scottish midfielder's delivery was so poor that it almost caught Onana out by dribbling wide of his near post. The Cameroonian scrambled across his goalline and eventually parried the ball - which was already going wide - out for a corner.

Neville slammed both players for the bizarre incident. Speaking mid-commentary, the former Red Devils defender said: "That was a pathetic passage of play. McGinn's delivery was awful and then Onana makes a mess of it."

Neville was not the only one to publicly call out Onana for his display at Villa Park. Ex-Chelsea defender John Terry was also critical and took to social media with his complaints.

The former defender wrote: "Onana is getting on my nerves, slowing the game down and then keeps giving it away. Catch it and stay in your box!"

Despite his slightly hairy moment, it is hard to argue that Onana wasn't key to Man United's positive result at Villa Park. He made eight saves throughout the 90 minutes, according to WhoScored - a number of them spectacular efforts to deny Villa star Ollie Watkins.

The former Inter Milan man could do little to keep Douglas Luiz's equaliser from close range after the in-form Rasmus Hojlund had given Man United the lead. Scott McTominay then clambered off the bench to grab a vital winner for Erik ten Hag's side.

Victory puts the Red Devils firmly back in the fight for a place in the Champions League come the end of the season. They are now just six points behind Tottenham with 14 games left to play.

Ten Hag's side will aim to extend their positive recent form next weekend as they travel to Kenilworth Road to take on struggling Luton. Fulham are then their next opponents ahead of what could potentially be a decisive Manchester derby in early March.

Elsewhere, Unai Emery will hope that his Villa side can get back on track sooner rather than later. The Midlands side have won just one out of their last five games in all competitions, while they have just two wins from their last seven Premier League games.
