Sean Maguire has broken about his silence on returning to Death In Paradise - 12 years after he first appeared on the show.

EastEnders alum Sean Maguire is back on the BBC detective drama as Marlon Collins. He first appeared on the show back in its very first episode, where he was locked up by the Saint Marie police team for stealing yachts.

However, he is now back on the show and Sean has promised Marlon is not as bad as he seems. Speaking about making his return to the fictional island of Saint Marie, Sean admitted it was "scary" being back on the show for its 100th episode, which is set to air this Sunday (February 4th) at 9pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

Speaking to The Mirror and other press, he said: "It was just completely lovely. There's not many jobs where they phone up and say, 'hey, you wanna go spend a couple of weeks in the Caribbean and bring your family and work with a lovely cast and crew'.

"I'd worked with some of the crew on different shows over the years. Obviously being in the first show with Don Warrington, I knew Ralf Little a little bit, so it doesn't get much better to be honest. It was a real - 'do you wanna go on holiday and then just do a little bit of acting for us?' It was just lovely and to be in the first one and then to be in the hundredth episode, it was a nice feather in my cap."

Sean described it as a "no brainer" coming back and loved exploring a more edgy role.

He added: "It was an absolute pleasure. It's really, really nice to be asked to do it. It was a no brainer. I've played nice guys a lot in my career, but as I'm getting older now, I'm starting to play a few more roles that are a little darker, a little bit more edgy.

"It's more interesting because a dark character offers more complexity. What I thought about him is he's not really, in my mind, he's not really a baddie. It's very important as an actor to sort of have some empathy for the character. You can't judge the character, and to play a character, you have to understand why they are doing what they're doing."

In one scene, Sean admits he took a big risk with his return, and discussed his "real fear" on set.

He told us: "It was when actually I was face to face with Ralf and I try to keep it as spontaneous and in the moment. I didn't really fully know what I was gonna do, which is a little bit scary because I know it's quite a big show and I thought I was taking a bit of a risk here, but I just allowed my real fear to go into what the character was feeling."
