Kylie Minogue fans are absolutely seething with the BRIT Awards thanks to a major snub.
Despite Kylie reportedly preparing to perform at the star-studded awards ceremony in March, the Australian pop princess' iconic anthem Padam Padam failed to land a nod when the nominations for Best International Song were announced last week.
Padam Padam scored Kylie her first top 10 single in 12 years back in May, peaking Number Eight on the UK Top 40, and quickly developed into a pop culture moment, with Padam even being used catch-all phrase by many in the LGBTQ+ community.
But it seemingly wasn't enough to impress BRIT bosses, who didn't include Padam Padam among the 15 songs nominated for Best International Song - causing Kylie fans to kick off on social media.
"Padam Padam not up for International Song...We riot," one fuming fan wrote on Twitter (X) as the snub was revealed on 24th January. "Kylie snubbed by the Brits, I'm going to off someone..." another raged last week, with a third adding: "we need to talk about REAL award snubs: kylie minogue not being nominated best pop song of the year for the BRITs."
BRITs host Mo Gilligan 'sees where Sam Smith is coming from' over female snubReplying to the BRIT Awards official Twitter account, one baffled Kylie fan asked: "@BRITs do you know the song Padam Padam or do ya'll live in Mars???????" Another simply declared: "Padam Padam not being nominated for a BRIT is disgusting."
The Brit Awards nominees in the Best International Song category include What Was I Made For by Billie Eilish, from the Barbie movie soundtrack, Flowers by Miley Cyrus, David Kushner's Daylight and Paint the Town Red by Doja Cat. Jazzy's Giving Me, People by Libianca, Meghan Trainor's Made You Look, Noah Kahan's Stick Season, Oliver Tree & Robin Schulz for Miss You, Vampire by Olivia Rodrigo, Peggy Gou's (It Goes Like) Nanana, Rema's Calm Down, Kill Bill by SZA, Tate McRae's Greedy and Water by Tyla make up the rest of the nominees.
One Kylie fan tried to explain why they believe Padam Padam didn't get a nod, tweeting: "People kicking off that Padam Padam isn’t nominated here. This category is sales/streams based. The Top 10 biggest intl songs of the eligibility period are nommed, then the academy vote for their fave. When the academy could choose Kylie (Intl Artist), they rightfully did! #BRITs."
"It's taken on a life of its own," Kylie confessed in June while discussing the Padam Padam's success. "I am having the time of my life seeing what people are doing, people are hilarious. It's become a noun, a verb, an adjective." In September, many fans called for 'Padam' to be officially added to the dictionary. Kylie - who is up for Best International Artist at the BRITs in March - finally revealed what the word actually means during an interview on Aussie show Sunrise. "No one knows what it means," Kylie joked, before adding: "I think its beauty is it means 'whatever'."
Padam Padam may have given Kylie one of her biggest hits of recent years but the catchy bop very almost went to Rita Ora! The song's producer, Lostboy, revealed in an interview earlier that there was uncertainty about whether the track was suitable for Kylie and newly-wed Rita was considered as an option.
He said: "They were unsure and there was a moment when Rita was going to cut it and it was worming around a few artists on that label," Despite this, he believed in Kylie's ability to make the song work, stating: "They were trying to make it work but they didn't think it was for Kylie. I was surprised at how confident she was that she could make it, that it would fit for her. But I think of her as someone who is so good at reinventing. It feels modern, but it also feels like Kylie."
