Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig's Oscars snub has been branded "wrong on every level" by a member of the Academy.
The nominations for the prestigious awards ceremony were announced earlier this week and caused controversy when Ryan Gosling was nominated as Best Supporting Actor for his role in the movie, but co-star Margot failed to get a mention for Best Actress for her role as Barbie and director Greta Gerwig wasn't named in the Best Director category.
However, America Ferrera was nominated for Best Supporting Actress, and Margot as a producer of the film and there's still a chance for a win with the Best Picture nomination. Greta meanwhile is nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay alongside her husband Noah Baumbach.

Now a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has called the snub from the other categories an example of "the ultimate in patriarchy". The source told PEOPLE: "I feel sad that that recognition, which is so deserving, was snubbed because it's wrong on every level."
Serena Williams finally breaks silence on Will Smith Oscar slap one year onThey explained how "each category, each branch nominates from their branch," with Best Picture voted on by all members. The source also described "how nominations work" adding that "every branch nominates for their branch and everybody votes for final voting."
They added that considering "how the algorithm worked" it's hard to understand that Gerwig "didn't get enough votes for a directing nod". The source also explained that the comedy theme in Barbie could be a contributing factor explaining that "comedies traditionally don't do well at the Academy".
They added: "And this is a film that, yes, was a comedy and it grossed over $1 billion. How do you not give credit to the director? How many female directors had films that gross that? This was a phenomenon." They also stated that the success of Barbie could be part of the reason it has failed to pick up nominations across the board.
They explained how "when you've got a film that's such a populist film" the popularity of it can make people think "Oh well, people went to see it. Let's show some love to other films." Best Director nominations for 2024 include Justine Triet for Anatomy of a Fall, Martin Scorsese for Killers of the Flower Moon, Christopher Nolan for Oppenheimer, Yorgos Lanthimos for Poor Things and Jonathan Glazer for The Zone of Interest.
Meanwhile, the Best Actress category sees Annette Bening nominated for Nyad, Lily Gladstone for Killers of the Flower Moon, Sandra Hüller for Anatomy of a Fall, Carey Mulligan for Maestro and Emma Stone for Poor Things.
