Sir Jim Ratcliffe claimed Jose Mourinho spearheaded a “catastrophic” period at Manchester United and “destroyed” Luke Shaw.

The Portuguese was in charge at Old Trafford between 2016 and 2018. He won the League Cup and Europa League during his first season but was unable to inspire the club to more success.

Mourinho was eventually sacked by the Red Devils hierarchy after a rotten third season and was eventually replaced by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. And, it is fair to say that United's new part-owner Ratcliffe was not a big fan of the Portuguese’s work at his boyhood club.

Speaking at the time, Ratcliffe told The Telegraph: "I am a season ticket holder at Chelsea. Have been for years, although I’m a Manchester United fan really. Or was….

"It’s not getting any better [at United]. It’s gone from bad to catastrophic. Talk about a glass-half-empty. And then you look at Mourinho. He’s so down. He destroyed Luke Shaw last season.”

Mourinho was eventually sacked in mid-December 2018. Fast forward four years and, following a disastrous spell with United's Premier League rivals Tottenham, the former Chelsea and Tottenham coach finds himself without a job once again.

He has been cut adrift by Italian side Roma, with the club sitting ninth in the Serie A table after just eight wins from their opening 20 league games. Mourinho’s contract was set to expire at the end of the season but he has now been relieved of his duties.

Explaining the decision to sack-him, club co-owners Dan and Ryan Friedkin said: “We would like to thank José on behalf of all of us at AS Roma for his passion and efforts since his arrival at the club.

“We will always have great memories of his tenure at Roma, but we believe that an immediate change is in the best interests of the club. We wish José and his assistants all the best in their future endeavours.”

Mourinho will now kick off his search for yet another new job following his Roma exit. He has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia in the past, while Newcastle have been touted as potential employers should he be tempted by a potential Premier League return.

Away from his stint with the Red Devils, Mourinho also oversaw stints with Chelsea and Tottenham. The latter ended in disaster after only 18 months.

Mourinho was infamously sacked just a day before Tottenham’s appearance in the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City. He then moved to Roma, where he led the club to the Europa Conference League title and an appearance in the Europa League final, where they were beaten by serial winners Sevilla.
