There are many products that claim to get rid of unsightly mould for good, but one man reckons a product costing under £20 is a must.

The cold conditions of winter can cause all sorts of damage to properties - especially mould. When the cold air outside meets the warm air inside, it can cause condensation to form. If not treated, this can turn into mould, which not only poses a risk to our properties, but also our health in the form of respiratory diseases.

While preventing mould from forming should be a priority, there are things you can do once it's formed. A professional painter and decorator from the Leicester-based company Paint My Walls have hailed the products they use to get rid of mould in properties.

They were called to a property where a landlord had lost tenants due to the amount of mould. Sharing a video from inside the house on TikTok, the experts showed that the property was absolutely covered in thick, black mould - including the walls, doorframes and even the ceiling.

The property clearly hadn't been treated for a long time, so the landlord had asked the experts for help. Luckily, the experts were able to banish the mould with a three-step process - finished off with a particularly amazing product costing under £20.

Firstly, they had to make sure to treat and remove the black mould. The painting pro first used a mould and mildew remover called Barrettine Mould & Mildew Cleaner, to scrub the walls clean, which can be purchased from Toolstation for £13.80 for a 4l bottle.

This surface clear can "control the growth" of algae, fungus, mould and mildew and can be used on most surfaces. Once the walls were dry, the expert went in with a Primer and Sealer paint from Zinsser called bulls Eye 1-2-3 Interior & Exterior Primer-Sealer, Stain Killer. The coating, which can be purchased for £19.99 from Screwfix, can protect "against fungal degradation" and block stains, which is ideal to prep the wall before painting.

Lastly, the experts coated the walls in a mould-resistant paint to stop it from coming back. According to Painters World, ensuring good ventilation is key to preventing mould - but anti-mould paint is a good option if you already have a problem. These are specifically designed to prevent mould from growing on your walls - either using biocides that kill spores, or other advanced technology that prevents moisture.

In the video, the experts use Dryzone Anti Condensation Paint, which can be purchased from B&Q for £24.99 for 1l, but there are cheaper products out there, such as Zinsser Mould Resistant Paint, which is £16.67 from Toolstation.

According to the product description, "Zinsser mould-resistant paint excels in areas of persistent high humidity, frequent temperature changes or poor air circulation. It contains a biocide that protects the dried coating against fungal degradation – the paint's film is designed to resist cracking, peeling and blistering for up to seven years before first maintenance".
