Rough sleepers have revealed the “best place” to live rough on the streets, hailing its community spirit where even the hooligans are a little friendly.

People in the homeless community have praised Glastonbury, better known for its music festival, which is home to a floating population of hippies, dreamers and lost souls drawn to the Somerset town’s mystical reputation. Rough sleeper Bugsy says the town is “better than most places” for being homeless, and revealed how police and firefighters helped him out when they found he was bedding down in a disused garage.

Bugsy told podcaster Wendall: “On Christmas day you got Christmas dinner – a couple of hundred people go to that. It brings all the different parts of the community together… nobody judges you.

“They're more understanding, they'll give you something to eat. I'm sleeping in an abandoned garage… the police turned up and said 'you're fine here, we haven't had any complaints or anything we just heard that someone was staying here'.

“I came back that night and there was loads of brand new duvets in plastic bags. The police asked me the next day ‘did you get all our stuff for you?’ The fire brigade went there as well and they put up a smoke alarm.”

Another homeless man said even the local hooligans are polite, Daily Star reported. Meanwhile, he would cross the street to avoid groups of young men in his native Crewe. He said: ”They smack you in the face and then go 'sorry about that mate’. I like it here, it suits my weird sense of responsibility."

One musician added: There are a lot of lost souls here, you just have to walk around by the White Spring and the Tor, you'll see so many disillusioned people that have been harmed by society and just take it out on people. There’s a darkness here. Everybody says there's so much light but really it's just very dark …there's a lot of bad things which happened here in the past.”
