Cinephiles can watch Oppenheimer from the comfort of their home ahead of the 96th Academy Awards, where the explosive biopic is up for a whopping 13 awards. Christopher Nolan’s box-office smash is nominated in several major categories including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor for star Cillian Murphy.
Many have tipped Oppenheimer as the film to finally earn Nolan and Murphy their first Oscars. It has already won the BAFTA and Golden Globe for Best Film, Best Director and Best Actor for Murphy – a strong indicator for how it will fare at the Oscars.
Robert Downey Jr. also scored a nomination for his performance as Lewis Strauss, while Ludwig Göransson earned a nod for best score. The hit biopic will once again go toe-to-toe with summer blockbuster Barbie – as well as Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon and Bradley Cooper’s Maestro – at the Oscars held at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre on Sunday (March 10).

Based on the Pulitzer-winning 2005 biography American Prometheus, Oppenheimer stars Murphy as the titular J. Robert Oppenheimer, the American known as the ‘father of the atomic bomb’. It charts the theoretical physicist’s rise and fall while centring around his leading role in developing the first nuclear weapons during World War II.

Christopher Nolan is in the running for Best DirectorAlongside Murphy and Downey Jr., Oppenheimer boasts a star-studded ensemble cast including Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Rami Malek, and Kenneth Branagh. The three-hour epic famously opened opposite Greta Gerwig’s Barbie on the same day last summer in the phenomenon known as Barbenheimer.
It earned more than $950 million at the global box office, marking Nolan’s third-highest grossing film behind The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises. It is now available to watch at home with both digital and physical releases.
Nolan has said that “a lot of time and energy” went into assembling Oppenheimer’s Blu-ray edition, working on it for months trying to translate the photography and the sound as intended and preserving the film’s soundscape, Variety reported. Film fans who prefer a physical copy can pick up Oppenheimer’s DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD editions for £9.99, £14.99 and £24.81 from retailers including Amazon and HMV.
