A reporter was 'excited' to try Greggs' newly returned Vegan Steak Bake, which has recently left pasty fans in a 'frenzy' - and has now given their verdict.

Back on the menu for a limited time only, following various impassioned petitions, Greggs temptingly describes the much longed for pastry treat as being made up of "layers of golden puff pastry, tasty Quorn pieces, with diced onions and a vegan-friendly gravy". The bake is also said to be "new and improved, but still as drool-worthy as you remember".

Keen to see whether the veggie-friendly option, which was first removed from the menu two years back could live up to the hype, writer Owen Younger headed to Greggs to order one for himself.

Writing for ChronicleLive, Owen remarked upon the appearance of the sought after bake, which he described as having 'a very similar look to its meaty counterpart', albeit 'paler in colour, due to the lack of egg wash, which gives other pastries their golden brown colour."

After taking his first bite, Owen noted that the Quorn filling was 'very close to having the same texture and taste as meat', however he could still taste the difference when compared with the longstanding meaty version. Owen wrote: "I liked the overall flavour, however, and Greggs, as they usually do, have done a great job at getting the taste as close as possible to the meat version."

He added: "Personally, as someone who does eat meat, I would tend to opt for that version in most situations, but I can certainly see why those who are vegan or vegetarian would choose this is a worthy alternative. One of the main advantages of the vegan products is that they are generally healthier than the meat versions, so this provides an option for those who are trying to cut down on calories.

"When it comes to this product in particular, I do expect it to be quite sought after, given the amount of people who wanted it come back in the first place. It is also hard to say just how long this product will be back on shelves, with Greggs just saying that is there for a limited time, so if you are wanting to try one, get it while you can."

Owen went on to admit that, previously, he didn't regard Greggs' vegan range to have made 'with a wider customer base in mind'. After trying the bake however, which follows the festive Spicy Veg Curry Bake, he found himself thinking again.
