Injustice is not over

Billed as the greatest miscarriage of justice in British history, the Post Office scandal is also one of the priciest with costs to the taxpayer topping £1billion.

There is probably no amount of money that could adequately compensate the 555 postmasters wrongly accused of theft. This includes those grotesquely jailed and dying before they knew they had been cleared.

It is therefore no surprise that so many families continue to feel aggrieved. Lawyers working for the Post Office as it doggedly fought to deny flaws in the Horizon IT system received much of that £1billion.

Solicitors representing the innocent deserve their fees. Yet the official treatment of the postmasters remains appalling. As we enter 2024 it is scandalous they are still battling for justice and for those responsible for their suffering to be held to account.

Mone alone

It's a bit rich that VIP lane PPE peer Michelle Mone and her tycoon husband Doug Barrowman are painting themselves as victims following their fire sale of an estimated £80million of assets.

Jet set baubles they are letting go include luxury homes, a private jet and a superyacht. Millions of hard-pressed families will feel so sorry for them. This self-pitying couple made a fortune selling what is claimed to be shoddy and unusable gear with taxpayers paying the bill.

It looks a very bad, expensive arrangement during a national and international crisis. Instead of feeling sympathy for the pair everyday Britons who picked up the tab for the Covid deal will see the scale of their spending and lifestyle and be revolted by it.

What the Henk

Storm Henk sweeping in to batter Britain after the Met Office crowned 2023 the UK’s second-hottest year on record
underlines scientists’ warnings.

They believe the climate crisis is fuelling ferocious swings in the world’s weather. Henk is another sign that they could be right.
