Man Utd set to make loss on Van de Beek as transfer clause inserted into deal

Manchester United are braced to take a huge financial hit on Donny van de Beek following his loan move to Eintracht Frankfurt.

The Dutch midfielder, 26, has endured a torrid time at United since joining the club from Ajax back in 2020 for £40million. After initially struggling for starts under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Van de Beek fared no better with Ralf Rangnick or Erik ten Hag: the same manager who gave him his break in Amsterdam.

Van de Beek turned down chances to leave United late in the summer transfer window but was always expected to depart in January. And the club will be forced to take a significant financial hit should he impress enough in Germany to turn his loan deal into a permanent one.

Per the terms of the agreement with Frankfurt, the Bundesliga outfit have the option to sign Van de Beek on a permanent basis next summer for just £12.1m. That deal would see Frankfurt pay just £9.5m up front with a further £2.1m in add-ons, per The Mail.

That represents a significant loss on the £40m sum United parted with to acquire Van de Beek's services three-and-a-half years ago - but getting his wages off the books could still help Ten Hag in the transfer market.

Ten Hag will be hoping to bolster his beleaguered squad ahead of the second half of the season and offloading a player who has made just a solitary Premier League appearance this season makes sense.

Speaking back in November, Van de Beek made it clear that he would have to move elsewhere if regular football would not be forthcoming at Manchester United.

He explained: ''I am bouncing to play matches again. The manager is making different choices now. We have a big squad and I am not the only one knocking on the door. We'll see in January what happens. I need to start playing games very soon - if not at Man United then at another club. I think I have to be ambitious.

"I have always been a lover of the game. I am absolutely crazy about football. I earn a good living at United, but money is not my motivation. I want to enjoy my work every day."
