A sport-obsessed 20-year-old woman has caused tremendous tension between herself and her brother after a fitness faux pas that he can’t forgive her for. Detailing her love of sport, she told how she had always loved being active, was the junior coach of a youth wrestling team, refereed basketball three times a week, and loved going to the gym and competitive rock wall climbing.

After her brother told her he and his wife were coming home for the holidays, he asked if she could recommend any trust exercises for him and his wife to do while they visited. “I told them I could get into the climbing gym on a good deal and he asked how much weight the harnesses and rope could hold. I looked it up and it's more than 2,000 pounds. He also asked how it was trust-based and I explained about belaying and climbing and trusting your belay partner will catch you when you fall,” she explained.

Admitting she had only met his brother’s wife once as they had moved across the country, she told how she was an ‘average weight’ when they met, and she had no idea that over the last few 3.5 years, she had gained more than 300 pounds. “My brother didn't mention that exercise might be an issue,” she said.

When the three of them met at the gym she didn’t comment on her sister-in-law’s weight, leaving them to their exercise, while she enjoyed hers. “After about 25 minutes my brother came over to me and told me they were leaving and we would meet at home. I told him ok and kept working on my bouldering until my two hours were up,” she recalled.

“After I came back to my parent's house, my SIL cornered me and screamed at me, talking about how I set her up to make her look and feel fat and how I rub my athleticism in her face. I apologised, but she and my brother got a hotel room.”

With the duo refusing to speak to her following the fitness fiasco, she headed online to ask Reddit if she was in the wrong. With more than 600 responses, many were on her side: “My guess is, you would have gotten screamed at for not inviting them too,” said one reader, while another said: “Perhaps you could have asked about their physical fitness to make appropriate suggestions, but a 400+ lb person should know they have limitations and they could have looked into it, too.”

Some placed the blame firmly at the sister-in-law’s feet, saying: “I think it's on the SIL. I would think that a person that heavy would never agree to something so challenging. Unless the brother didn't tell his wife what he had planned…”

One said: “Do you mean to tell me that your bro and his wife did not have a conversation about doing this activity? What did they think rock climbing was going to entail? Give me a break. One of them had to be smart enough to realise she wasn’t going to be able to do that.”
