Jamie Carragher took a sly dig at Manchester United during their Boxing Day game against Aston Villa... only for it to backfire.

Carragher described Liverpool's failure to beat the Red Devils earlier this month as "their worst result of the season". The remark was made at half-time when Unai Emery's side boasted a two-goal lead after John McGinn and Leander Dendoncker found the net.

United were much better in the second half and equalised through Alejandro Garnacho's brilliant brace. They completed their comeback late on when Rasmus Hojlund ended his 15-game wait for a Premier League goal. The result leaves United sixth in the table, 11 points behind leaders Liverpool. Villa, meanwhile, are now three points off the top.

Liverpool were widely expected to beat United when the two teams met at Anfield earlier this month. Jurgen Klopp's side dominated the game, having 34 shots on goal and 12 corners. United had just six attempts on goal in comparison and no corners.

Yet Liverpool couldn't break down the Red Devils, as the one-sided game finished goalless. Carragher believes his former employers may come to regret that result at the end of the season after watching United struggle against Villa on Boxing Day.

Carragher made his feelings known at half-time when Villa boasted a two-goal lead. He wrote on X: "Liverpool drawing at home to Man Utd is their worst result of the season."

But Carragher was let with egg on his face after United's comeback. Gary Neville waited until after Garnacho's equaliser to comment on the Boxing Day clash. "Brilliant second half, Manchester United," wrote the Red Devils legend on X.

Ally McCoist was also impressed with United's display. "The transformation from United in the second half from the first was incredible," he told Amazon Prime. "It is what Erik ten Hag and the home crowd would have wanted, and the side have delivered it.

"We said at half time it would be interesting to see what reaction United would provide in the second half, and boy did they give a big one. You have to balance that by saying Villa have been a massive disappointment in the second 45 minutes."

Rangers legend McCoist also praised Hojlund for getting off the mark in the Premier League. He said: "It's amazing, it really is! I'm actually feeling relief for Rasmus Hojlund.

"It is one of those chances where it drops to you and you don't have to think about it. It comes off McGinn's right knee from the corner and he just takes the snapshot. An excellent finish, he swivels and smashes the finish off the post."
