Michael Chandler explains his theory about why Conor McGregor looks so beefy

Michael Chandler thinks UFC rival Conor McGregor isn't as beefy in person as he looks in some recent social media pictures.

McGregor hasn't fought since breaking his leg against Dustin Poirier in their July 2021 trilogy fight. The Irishman has piled on a lot of muscle since the injury and even claimed to weigh 190lb at his peak, but has since trimmed down as he prepares for an expected comeback fight against Chandler.

The Irishman got the ball rolling on his planned fight by re-entering the USADA drug-testing pool two months ago and has since returned three negative samples. Chandler has been patiently waiting on the sidelines for an announcement of his fight with McGregor and he explained why his rival isn't as big as many fans think he is.

“Conor likes to act like he’s in control so he could have said he wants to fight at 205lb and I would been like, ‘Okay. I’ll fight you wherever dude.’ Truly, I’m bigger than Conor. He’s not that big at all. He looks big, he’s got really great angles and really great camera photography work and lighting in all of his photos and stuff,” Chandler told Steve-O’s Wild Ride podcast.

“I said I wanted to fight him at 170lb because he was so big and he was so beefy… he was really really big so I was like. ‘Okay there’s no way he’s going to fight at 155lb.’ I don’t want to fight at 155lb. I weigh like 190lb, I would love to fight at 170lb so I figured I’d call him out at 170lb."

McGregor was in attendance for Anthony Joshua vs Otto Wallin in Saudi Arabia last weekend and hit out at the UFC for delays over his fighting return. The former two-weight champion discussed a potential fight with boxing legend Manny Pacquiao by also suggesting talks have stalled for a UFC 300 comeback against Chandler in April.

Chandler is glad to see more training footage on McGregor's social media pages but questioned the legitimacy of his clips. "He looks like he’s training a lot. That’s the thing. Whether he’s is training just for those 15 seconds and puts out a clip or he’s training for hours, he looks like he’s training and he’s getting in better shape so I don’t know what the holdup is, Conor," he added.
