If you're looking to be more sustainable this Christmas, this one's for you.

A crafty content creator has come up with an ingenious way to save some money this festive season, with do-it-yourself Christmas gift tags constructed from leftover food packaging. They look absolutely stunning and will take the presents under your tree to the next level.

When it comes to gift tags, there are two main schools of thought: on one end you have those who finish their Christmas present shopping by the end of November who obviously also have made sure to buy specially matching gift tags.

At the other end of the spectrum, there are the less organised amongst us - those who simply cut strips of flimsy wrapping paper from the sheet as a panic-stricken last-minute gift tag that will just have to do because you've run out of time as the clock ticks ever closer to Christmas Day.

With this expert tip, long gone are the days of either parting with your hard-earned money buying gift tags or handing over presents with less than aesthetically pleasing bits of wrapping paper attached.

The content creator, Chloe Plumstead, posted the short video on her Instagram account, in which she explained how to make beautiful gift tags from leftover food packaging, amongst other things you will likely have lying around at home or in your recycling bin.

In the caption of the video, she explained that all you need to make these stunning DIY gift tags is a pair of scissors, a hole punch, and some "Twine, jute or recycled ribbon".

She collected various "pretty packaging" for her DIY gift tags, which included metallic cardboard packaging from a packet of smoked salmon and the box that coffee capsules came in. You could also use, as Chloe did, any shopping bags you have left over made from cardboard or thicker paper.

Chloe demonstrated making one of her gift tags which came in a variety of shapes and sizes. When making a circular gift tag, she used a roll of ribbon as an outline to get the perfect circle before cutting it out - you could use anything circular for this, like the bottom of a cup, or whip out your trusty compass if you've got one.

The crafty content creator also made some that were shaped like houses, but this hack is a really flexible one and you could cut them to any shape you like depending on the size of the packaging you are repurposing. Chloe recommends that anyone giving it a go tries "different shapes! Circles, tags, Christmas trees, snowflakes - whatever you fancy".

Once the shapes were cut out, Chloe simply punched a hole about a centimetre from the edge of the tag and looped twine through it, and then they are ready to be used.

These repurposed gift tags could also be used, Chloe explained, "as sustainable Christmas decorations for the tree or table display" - so get rooting in your recycling bin for inspiration.
